Lament
$18
This work serves as a standalone piece, but is also Movement 2 of Joy and Its Companions.
Lament was written as a reflection of the tragedy and sorrow that exists all around us. The piece yearns joyfully for a hopeful future, but allows heartbreak and disappointment to exist alongside its themes and harmonies. With forward motion driving all but the final moments of the score, a wide spectrum of emotions and attitudes are quickly felt and moved on from. In the final statement of the piece, all that was felt is given space to be acknowledged by a wandering melody, accompanied by sustained harmonies.
GRADE 4:
Full of 7th chords with extensions, the harmony of lament makes for a unique and engaging case study in intonation and color. Much of the piece is driven by staccato basslines and high harmonies, with the rhythm of this piece being vital to delivering the feeling of hope. In contrast, solos and duets appear throughout the piece offering brief moments for personal phrasing as a means of reflection.
